‘Last Night’s Thunder Turned Our Compass’ | Sugar Jones Atelier | Northeast Harbor, Maine | 2022
During COVID, my fellow sculptor Nikki Moser and I collaboratively read Moby Dick. We would meet multiple times a week via Zoom to discuss our reading and organize our research on Google Drive. Our goal was to read, research and develop a sculptural response. We began our reading on May 13, 2020 and finished on June 14, 2021. It was difficult to be done with that phase of our project. It had become ritual and connection. We created a vast archive of written and visual interests sparked by Melville, Ahab, Ishmael, Moby Dick and crew.
Our sculptural response was spent in residence together. We dedicated two weeks to making side by side at Nikki's studio in Northeast Harbor, Maine. It was a stark contrast to life during COVID - a renewal of why we love making and materials. We are just beginning our relationship with Moby Dick.
