‘rooted in ruins’ | The Overlook Gallery at Unbound Visual Arts | Brighton, MA | 2025
rooted in ruins was a collaborative residency organized by Caroline Sirois. As participating artists, we were asked to explore our relationship to ruins, plants, soil and the earth. What might we say of the aesthetics of ruins? How does this collaboration lift up reciprocity between humans and nature & between humans and humans? My collaboration with artist, Nancy Hart, focused on Robert Smithson's seminal earthwork, The Spiral Jetty and his film and writings about time, site, nonsite, entropy and the spiral. Our work is titled No Frame. In addition, I responded with a piece on my own called The Salt Works. It began with the concept of healing through a playful use of the hose as conduit for water. Salt became the symbolic substitute for water (heavily influenced by No Frame) which led to circulation, systems, breathing, release and communication as potential results of utilizing this odd tool.
